There is no such thing as an inspiration block

"Where did he get all that information from?" my friend wondered about the epic "The Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov. Bulgakov seemed to have combined phantasy and his dream world while trying to come up with the satiric representation of the Russian society at that time. I am pretty sure he had his own secrets and tricks for this. The question can also be "how does anyone get inspiration about anything", or more importantly, "how does one start, develop and finish a story".

Working on stories organically I might have the basic idea or skeleton for the story, whilst getting inspiration "on the way" to keep building it further. Story is like a living being, it simply writes itself, but story elements can appear from different corners. I also work on more pieces in parallel, eventually some of them evolve or merge into a new one.

Be open for insights from unexpected corners!

For the novel "Beyond the mirror" I used some of the motives of Toltec tradition as a result of my trip to Mexico. However, there was this particular moment that was the most decisive in shaping the novel. On the last day of the trip (after the program we were having ended) I had breakfast with two women who, same as myself, stayed a day longer before flying back. And there, they said something that triggered the way to finish my novel. It was not even a concrete thing, they just mentioned something that brought an idea through a simple shift in my mind. I find these moments quite amazing as this confirms that it is often not about the main road, you have to be able to step aside as well.
