Ships as a dream metaphor
One of the dreams featured in my novel "Beyond the mirror" was about uncovering secrets related to my birthland, ex-Yugoslavia, and frequent family holiday visits to the Adriatic Sea when I was a child. It was a short but impactful dream, where I found myself at a mystical coast which looked differently from what I would normally observe in that region. There were stones to be found with colourful drawings in the Mesoamerican style, but this could easily refer to some other unexplored cultures as well. At the very moment I pointed this surprising finding to my father, a ship with the prow in the shape of a swan approached the shore as an answer to my comment.
Dreams can provide clues to your questions or creative projects!
This dream by itself is probably not easy to understand, much of the context from the waking state is needed to clarify it further. At the time, I was working on my novel in search of information that would facilitate understanding the cultural heritage of the Balkan area in a deeper sense. The stones with drawings may have suggested that the area holds secrets even older than what we know of. The peculiar ship has for me the association with the story of Avalon, which brings the question of how the Adriatic Sea relates to the British Isles in the first place. The main idea is that of a myth pointing to supressed ancient knowledge that had to give way to newly forming belief structures. Perhaps other areas in the world have the equivalent of Avalon story in a broader sense. Or, perhaps, there is a missing link to prehistoric old Europe that centres around Balkan, but also stretches farther into the surrounding area, connecting with western tribes at a more profound level; the story which was not widely documented, so now we have to gather other types of clues.
Apart from this
dream that seemed to have originated from the collective, I have had
various, more personally oriented dreams, featuring ships in all shapes and
contexts. To name a few, there were dreams where I paraded in whimsical dresses on a
boat gliding along canals, when a splash of water would knock me down at the
merriment of others observing the scene. Then there were dreams of travelling
on a cruise ship where the background music or discussing an exotic menu with a
waiter would suggest if the journey was across the Mediterranean or the Red Sea.
Such dreams can prophetically announce such a journey even years in advance or
bring back memories of similar trips from the past to reminds us of something
that was important at the time. Or they can simply point to neccessity for enjoyment of life.
Recurring symbolism is often personal
There were also dreams of huge cargo ships preparing for a faraway trip into the unknown, the sound of the horn ominously calling for the departure one should not be late for. I always shudder when sighting these ships over day, as this scene reminds me of something that may be the last ride.
And then there were expedition ships travelling to the Arctic where I would intentionally or accidently find myself at. In most of the cases I would not reject the situation and rather act like the crew, ready to take on whatever is necessary. The crew would at times seem a bit too adventurous, with no plan, often disregarding dangers of the rough seas or other suspicious ships travelling by. And, yes, there were shootings and gunfire as well, like being in the middle of a battle; interestingly enough, running to the other end of the ship often seemed to be the way out. However, the most disconcerting dreams are those when I am innocently standing on a piece of land that looks like it is attached to the firm ground, only to realize it is a moving platform that turns into a giant ferry setting off on a journey I did not sign up for.
For someone who has been living in Amsterdam, which is virtually the city of ships, it may not be so strange that they appear in my dreams. But is this only the reflection? Or is the dream using symbols in one's immediate environment to put the message across? Altogether, it is clear that these dreams are about phases in life and emotional states during changes. Waters are usually associated with emotions, so a journey on a ship often shows how we deal with changes that inevitably occur in life.
